A solid brass butt hinge should not be specified by material and finish alone.

Two hinges described as “solid brass” may differ in leaf thickness, pin structure, knuckle accuracy, bearing system, screw-hole layout and intended load. These differences affect installation, movement and long-term performance.

For B2B sourcing, the specification should begin with the application rather than a catalogue photograph.

Door Hinges and Cabinet Hinges Are Not the Same

Door hinges and furniture hinges may use the same basic two-leaf structure, but their working conditions are different.

A door hinge may need to support greater weight, operate more frequently and remain aligned over a larger installation area. Cabinet and furniture hinges are usually smaller, but visible gaps, screw positions and decorative details can be more sensitive.

Before selecting a hinge, confirm:

  • Door, cabinet or furniture application

  • Panel material and thickness

  • Dimensions and weight of the moving part

  • Expected frequency of use

  • Mortise or non-mortise installation

  • Indoor or outdoor environment

  • Required appearance and finish

One hinge specification should not be applied automatically to every project.

Confirm the Base Material

“Brass finish” describes appearance, not necessarily the base material.

A brass-coloured hinge may be made from steel, zinc alloy or another material with a brass-coloured surface. If the project requires solid brass, the specification should state this clearly.

The buyer should also confirm whether the pin, bearings and screws use the same material as the leaves. Different components may require different materials for strength, wear resistance or cost control.

Material selection should consider the complete hinge assembly rather than only the visible leaves.

Hinge Size and Leaf Thickness

Hinge size is normally stated using the height and total open width. These dimensions must match the door or furniture structure and the prepared installation area.

Leaf thickness also matters. A thicker leaf is not automatically suitable for every application, but insufficient thickness can affect rigidity and screw support.

The specification should record:

  • Hinge height

  • Open width

  • Leaf width

  • Leaf thickness

  • Knuckle diameter

  • Pin diameter

  • Corner shape

  • Required opening angle

Dimensions should be confirmed from a drawing or physical sample before production.

Pin, Knuckle and Bearing Structure

The two leaves rotate around the pin and knuckle assembly. Poor alignment in this area can create excessive friction, noise, looseness or uneven movement.

Depending on the application, the hinge may use:

  • A plain pin structure

  • Washers between knuckles

  • Ball bearings

  • A removable pin

  • A non-removable pin

  • Decorative finials

Ball bearings can reduce friction for suitable door applications, but they are not necessary for every cabinet or furniture hinge.

The required structure should be selected according to load, operating frequency and installation conditions.

Mortise and Non-Mortise Hinges

A mortise hinge is installed into recesses prepared in the door and frame. The leaves sit within the recessed areas, allowing the installed surfaces to align correctly.

A non-mortise hinge is designed to operate without two conventional full-depth recesses. Its leaf structure must be matched to the intended installation.

The buyer should not choose between these types by appearance alone. Panel thickness, clearances, opening movement and installation method must all be checked.

A sample installation is especially useful when developing a new furniture or door system.

Screw Holes and Fasteners

Screw-hole position affects both installation and appearance.

The number, diameter, countersink and spacing of the holes should match the hinge size and substrate. Countersunk screw heads should sit correctly without remaining raised or cutting too deeply into the leaf.

Confirm:

  • Number of screw holes

  • Hole diameter

  • Countersink angle and depth

  • Hole spacing

  • Screw material and finish

  • Screw length

  • Wood, metal or another installation substrate

The supplied screws should be tested with the actual hinge and application whenever possible.

Surface Preparation and Finish

Solid brass hinges can receive polished, brushed, satin, antique, plated or living finishes.

The final appearance depends on surface preparation as well as the selected colour. Scratches, uneven polishing and sharp edges may remain visible beneath a decorative finish.

The specification should confirm:

  • Surface texture

  • Colour reference

  • Gloss level

  • Plating or chemical colouring

  • Lacquer or sealing requirement

  • Intended ageing behaviour

  • Acceptable colour variation

Hinges used with handles, knobs and other visible hardware should be reviewed together. Using the same finish name does not guarantee that different products will look identical.

Sampling and Quality Control

A hinge sample should be evaluated as a working component, not only as a finished metal part.

Inspection may include:

  • Overall dimensions

  • Leaf flatness and thickness

  • Pin and knuckle alignment

  • Opening and closing movement

  • Side play

  • Screw fit

  • Surface defects

  • Finish consistency

  • Installed appearance

For projects with defined performance requirements, the buyer should state the required test method and acceptance criteria before production.

ANSI/BHMA A156.1 includes requirements relating to dimensions, strength, wear, friction and cycle testing for butts and hinges. A product should not be described as compliant or certified unless the required testing and certification have actually been completed.

What B2B Buyers Should Send

To evaluate a custom hinge project, provide:

  • Drawing or reference sample

  • Door, cabinet or furniture application

  • Required dimensions

  • Leaf and pin structure

  • Installation method

  • Expected quantity

  • Finish direction

  • Screw requirements

  • Required tolerances or testing

These details allow the manufacturer to evaluate the material, manufacturing route, assembly and inspection requirements before sampling.
